OLDBOY REVIEW: I CRINGED AND SAT IN AWE

Oldboy Review (NON-SPOILER)

Right off the bat, this movie is an intricate, thoughtful film and is undeniably unique. It's really unpredictable in a since, as you don't know what the heck is going to happen.

The movie follows a man imprisoned in a room for 15 years, all in an act of revenge that is masterfully planned to the antagonist. When I learned just how much planning went into getting this revenge, I had to applaud this villain for not being 1 dimensional.

THE fight scene is without any cuts, in which the camera is just panning down this hallway as this man just beats this mob of men down. The amazing score is just beaming in this moment, "A Lonely Place" shines through. This is pretty much the godfather of hallway fights that preceded Daredevil.

I will say that they're are some very cringe worthy moments in the film. This ties back into that revenge thread that is only fully realized in the end. It's masterfully crafted and equally bizarre. It wonderfully ties in the line (paraphrasing) "The question isn't why I put you in there for 15 years, it's why I let you out."

You applaud the villain who plays the hero to where he wants him, and it's not by mere force since he's oblivious to what's really been going on. "Your gravest mistake wasn't failing to find the answer. You can't find the right answer if you ask the wrong questions." The film has identity and drives home the point through and through "Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone." It's woven in really well, you'll get that "Oh shoot!" moment.

All in all, I understand why it's critically well received, it's a brilliant movie. I give it a 5/5 for originality and being one of those unforgettable films.
